S412 Southern wet heaths

New search

Description

Heaths of Erica tetralix with Genista anglica s.l. and other endemic hygrophilous congeners like G. micrantha on almost permanently waterlogged soils, often fringing bogs (@Q1) or fens (@Q2), or alternating with them in a dynamic mosaic mediated by the enhanced mineralization of peat, and consequent depression, in the hummocks colonised by the heath. EUNIS, in the definition of S411 (“Northern wet heaths), indicates that of such unit replaces the more general S412 in the most humid, central areas of northwestern Iberian wet heaths. Nonetheless, this distinction is hardly operative, and we prefer to admit one sinlge unit, at least at level IV.
